Jets Brass Has Been To This Revis Rodeo

With all this talk of a long hold-out going around, there is something that I want to remind Jet fans off. Jets brass and Revis have been to this rodeo before. If you remember back a few years the two sides weren’t able to agree on a rookie contract in time for the start of camp. I don’t remember exactly how long the previous holdout lasted but if my memory serves me right, Revis didn’t make it to too much camp. His rookie season he still managed to record 87 tackles, 17 passes defended and 3 interceptions. That was at the start of his young career and he still managed to put up great numbers after missing a lot of camp. Now that he has been around the block the few times, I am led to believe that even if Revis misses a lot of camp that once signed he will still put up the great numbers that we expect from him.
I know that the other day I said that the Jets needed Revis in camp to help the secondary gel as a unit and that still may be true. However it is possible that a lot can be gained from Antonio Cromartie, Kyle Wilson and Dwight Lowery combining to get all the training camp and preseason snaps with the first team. It would force Cromartie to take more of a leadership role in the secondary since he would be the seasoned vet of the group. Also it gives all those players experience in the defense so that once Revis rejoins the team; each player would be much better suited to fulfill their lesser role. Cromartie who would be used to covering the number one receiver would be asked to man up on the opponents #2. Wilson, who would be acclimated to being a starting corner, would only be asked to fulfill the nickel-back position. Lastly, Lowery who is entering his third year with the Jets and who has experience as a starter would only be asked to be the Jets Dime-back. This would leave the Jets at a great advantage because they would have 4 starting quality players to fulfill 2 spots. There is one last point that I would like to make, although skill wise Revis is far and above the Jets best player in the secondary, he is not the most knowledgeable about Coach Ryan’s Defense. That player is Jim Leonhard who is much more experienced in the Rex Ryan defense and whose hardnosed attitude makes him very capable of being the type of leader that could make this defensive unit gel without the help of Revis.
I certainly am not saying that the Jets are better off if this ends up being a long holdout. I am simply saying that if by chance it does become a Jet fans worst night mare and Revis misses all of camp, that it isn’t the end of the world. The only thing that is important is that when the Jets defense takes the field in the season’s first Monday night game that Revis is running out onto the field with them. Because no matter how much camp he attends he will still be in great shape and will still be the best defender in the game.
